At Wilson’s Country, we’re always looking for smarter, cleaner ways to get our produce from field to shelf. That’s why we’ve partnered with McCulla Ireland, a pioneer in low-carbon logistics, to make a big shift in how we provide transport — moving from diesel to biomethane-powered haulage.

💨 What Is Biomethane and Why Does It Matter?

Biomethane is a renewable fuel made by capturing methane from organic waste — like food waste, farm slurry, or plant material — and upgrading it to use as vehicle fuel and electricity. It’s one of the cleanest alternatives to diesel available today and can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90%.

Compared to conventional diesel (with a CO₂e emissions factor of 2.7 kg per litre), biomethane’s impact is just 0.00521 kg CO₂e — a massive difference that directly supports our goal of climate-smart logistics.

🔄 From Waste to Wheels: Closing the Loop

What makes this partnership even more exciting is that the biomethane used by McCulla’s trucks is produced at their own anaerobic digestion (AD) plant, which runs on food waste. This circular approach means we’re not only cutting emissions but also helping divert waste from landfill.

At Wilson’s Country, this aligns perfectly with our zero-waste-to-landfill policy and wider environmental strategy. It also complements our own on-site AD plant, which generates approx 60% of our electricity needs from potato waste.

The switch to biomethane-powered haulage came as part of a broader review of how we could decarbonise our Scope 3 emissions — those linked to activities beyond our direct control, such as distribution.

Choosing McCulla wasn’t just about sustainability credentials; it was also a strategic supply chain decision, ensuring we could scale greener transport without compromising service, reliability, or delivery reach.

By using biomethane for our outbound logistics, Wilson’s Country is delivering potatoes that aren’t just fresh and locally grown — they’re moved sustainably, with the carbon savings to prove it.
